WHY WE DO IT “passion for life“

Our passion for travel, exploring new places and sharing skills for building a happier & healthy life are paramount in the common bond the DARE team holds. We all believe that to take somebody out of their normal environment, place them into an inspiring situation, then support them to learn will give people the courage to make changes in their life needed to create a more positive and life-enhancing future. We want our support & ongoing relationship with our guests to provide constant encouragement to allow them to confidently continue along this path long after they leave our retreats.

WHO WE DO IT FOR “the gift of giving“

Giving back is part of the culture of DARE and we are happy to have an opportunity to help in a small way those disadvantaged or overwhelmed by poverty, unemployment and lack of education. DARE has a philanthropy program and pledges to donate back to the local community or worthwhile charity of that region. We have listed the charities we support here so you can see the wonderful work they are doing. Guests, should they desire, will get an opportunity to make separate additional donations to the monies pledged as part of the retreat program. When you book your retreat please make a selection from the nominated list so we will know where you would like your retreat money to go. For anybody interested we are also happy for you to go out on site and visit your chosen charity to see firsthand the incredible work being done.

WHO WE SUPPORT

Charity 1 - Yayasan Solemen Indonesia (Solemen Foundation)

A dedicated group of passionate individuals who conduct barefoot walks in Bali and other countries to raise money and awareness for the many poor, sick, orphaned, homeless & underprivileged children who walk barefoot every day.

SOLE MEN’s OUTREACH program searches out for, and is able to react immediately to assess and action the alleviation of individual cases of suffering. SOLE MEN’s Barefoot Walks raise awareness of our projects and attract much media attention. They talk directly with villagers in their environment and forge links to help the disadvantaged locally. On all walks they distribute their health and safety education manuals as well as clothing, books, toys and household goods collected throughout the year.

They further support the following organisations, who Solemen Foundation affectionately describes as their five sister partners. If your group decides to support SOLE MEN Foundation and allow them to distribute the funds as required or you may prefer to nominate one of the sister partners that you specifically want to assist.

Bali Children's Project - Scholarship & Education
Anak Anak Bali (Bali Kids) - Children's Home & Medical Facility
Yayasan Bumi Sehat - free birthing clinic & community health centre
YPAC - home & school for disabled children

Charity 2 - Jodie O’Shea Orphanage

A compassionate and determined group of people who combined their resources to improve the lives of children in Bali. Like most things in life, implementing the decision to open an orphanage in memory of Jodie O'Shea, did not happen overnight. In the aftermath of the Bali bombing on October 12, 2002, many people wanted to contribute in some way to create a future of opportunities for those who had very little.

The Jodie O'Shea Orphanage opened its doors in March 2005 & since, through the kindness of support from the public, now provide a home to over fifty children ranging in ages from 2 to 18 years. Of these children, some are from Sumba, a very poor and arid island to the east of Bali, some are from Bali, and few of them are from other islands of Indonesia. Since moving to their new home these children have undergone an amazing transformation. Prior to coming to the orphanage all of them had grown up malnourished in poverty-stricken areas, usually within one parent families, surviving on a meager hand-to-mouth existence. Today, however, in their new home the children are embracing a life they have never known - a healthy diet, an education, being nurtured and cared for and having the freedom to simply be children. It must be stressed, however, that all of the children's families love and care about them immensely but have had to make the difficult decision to send their children elsewhere so as to provide them with a better life and ultimately a better future.
